Character: White amorphous powder, odorless, smell-less and nontoxic. Relative density is about 3.5825, melting point 2852, boiling point 3600, It is soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution, difficult to dissolve in water, and insoluble in alcohol. And can be changed into crystal by high-temperature burning above 1000, and into dead-burned magnesium oxide or sintered magnesium oxide above 1500. When meeting with carbon dioxide in the air, it shall produce basic magnesium carbonate. 
Application: Silicon steel magnesia not only possesses the physical and chemical properties of active magnesium oxide, but also can react with acidic oxides such as silica (SiO2), at high-temperature, to form MgSiO3 or react further to generate MgSiO4 which is the key ingredient of insulation coating for silicon-steel sheet. Therefore, it is mainly used as the separant in the high-temperature annealing of silicon steel in the manufacturing process, and the agent for formation of coating insulation, in order to improve the insulation performance of the silicon steel sheet, and reduce the degree of wear of the silicon steel sheet; meanwhile, it is also the best chemical raw material for production of the oriented silicon steel sheet.
